Sofia Will Have Second Sofia Land
Sofia mayor Boyko Borissov and the head of the State Agency for Youth and Sports (SAYS) Vessela Lecheva discussed the construction of new amusement and sports complexes in Sofia, Bulgarian language daily Standart reported on March 20.A new amusement park, similar to the former Sofialand, will open doors near Sofia’s Zapaden Park (West park), the capital’s chief architect Petar Dikov told Standart daily.
Sofia city hall will invite a concession for the garden near Zapaden Park in the coming months. The place is very appropriate for a new amusement park, because there is no car traffic nearby, Dikov commented.
However, he admitted that no one has expressed an interest in the project so far, but he was positive that candidates would soon appear.
Ilinden regional mayor Roumyana Doichinova, though, said that she did not have a clue about the contemplated enterprise on the premises of her municipality.
The other initiative that was discussed during Borrissov and Lecheva’s meeting was Sofia’s application to become host of the European volleyball championship in 2011. Currently, Sofia and Varna are in a heated competition to host the event. Therefore the capital’s governors are working hard on the development of a new 6 000-seat sports hall in Mladost neighbourhood right across Hit hypermarket.
The documents for its construction would be ready by the end of the month, Borissov said. The complex is estimated at 60-100 million euro.
Sofia Municipality and SAYS are mulling the submission of Sofia’s application for hosting the 2018 Winter Olympics, as well. It would be possible after the construction of a National sports hall, seating 10 000-12 000 people, near the Fourth Kilometer along Tzarigradsko Chose, between Iztok and Moussagenitsa neighbourhoods, Lecheva said. And the former Yunak stadium in Borissova Gradina (Boris’ garden) will be revamped into a modern skating rink, with view to being used in the event of Sofia hosting the Winter Olympics 2018.
